Additional Information:

There is something for everyone within English.  Students study a wide range of exciting authors and create many different forms of writing as well as demonstrating their spoken skills.  We aim to continually raise achievement in English through quality teaching and high expectations.

In English we are enthusiastic about creating a culture of reading and passing on our love of literature and books.  Year 7 and 8 students participate in the Accelerated Reading Programme - this is designed to improve literacy skills, which students can access at home as well as in school.  This encourages students to increase their reading and challenge themselves to read a wide variety of books.  We also offer many exciting extra-curricular opportunities, such as theatre visits, creative writing workshops and other lunchtime activities.

Students work towards two qualifications at GCSE - English Language and English Literature  for which they are given the opportunity to explore a range of literature texts from Blood Brothers and Romeo & Juliet to A Christmas Carol.  In addition to this, students explore fiction and non-fiction writing and extracts as well as poetry from a variety of authors.

In Media Studies, students engage with a variety of print-based and audio-visual texts, examining how different sub-sections of society are represented in the media and how audiences are created and targeted.  They also create their own media texts and consider how they would fit into the existing marketplace.

We hope that your student will gain a love of English and enjoy developing their skills for analysis and problem solving.
